The ocean is a fascinating topic for children, which is part of the reason why I had to make an ocean sensory bin! The unknown of the deep blue sea and the amazing sea creatures are truly a curiosity.
When my son picked out Way Down Deep In The Deep Blue Sea by Jan Peck to read before bed, I KNEW this had to be made into sensory bin activities.
In this book, a little boy is on an imaginary adventure through the deep blue sea, meeting various sea animals, and finding special treasures!
This is such a fun story to use the actual sea creatures and setting to practice important reading comprehension skills.

If you are not familiar with the summer slide, it is a phrase for summertime learning loss. Learning loss can happen when children do not practice the skills that they have learned during the school year and their skills decline. It is not uncommon for children to return to school at a lower academic level than when they left the previous school year.
Here are some summer slide statistics:
– The equivalent of one month of learning is lost after summer vacation
– 2.6 months of math skills are lost over the summer
– 2 months of reading are lost over the summer
– 6 weeks are spent re-learning old material in the fall to make up for summer learning loss
Children do not need summer school, but simply doing one academic skill every day can keep the summer slide away!
