Thousands of volunteer's flock to Elkhorn to help clean up damages left by tornadoes
NOW OUR CREWS SPOTTED DOZENS OF PEOPLE DIGGING THROUGH THE WRECKAGE TODAY, BUT A REMINDER FOR NEBRASKA AUTHORITIES DON’T WANT YOU TO GO OUT THERE UNLESS YOU’RE WORKING WITH COORDINATED EFFORTS FOR SAFETY. KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN’S EDDIE MITCHELL MET A GROUP OF PEOPLE HELPING A MAN WHO LOST HIS HOME LAST NIGHT. DOWNED POWER LINES, HOUSES COMPLETELY DESTROYED. FAMILIES LEFT DEVASTATED AFTER TORNADOES RIPPED THROUGH THIS ELKHORN AREA FRIDAY EVENING. IT WAS UNSETTLING. THAT’S RON MCCOY, A HOMEOWNER IN RAMBLEWOOD WHO WATCHED HIS HOME TORN APART FROM HIS TRUCK IN A NEARBY CUL DE SAC. NOT GOOD. UM, I I WATCHED SOME OF IT, BUT THEN I DIDN’T KNOW IF I WAS GOING TO GET HIT, SO I COVERED MY HEAD. AND THEN OVER IN MY TRUCK, ALL THIS DISASTER LEADING TO THOUSANDS OF VOLUNTEERS FLOODING TO THE RAMBLEWOOD COMMUNITY IN ELKHORN MAN, THERE’S A BUNCH OF VOLUNTEERS HERE THAT ARE KICKING SOME --, AND IT’S REALLY APPRECIATE AND IT’S BEYOND MY EXPECTATIONS, WAY BEYOND HELPING CUT DEBRIS AS WELL AS CLEARED OUT THE OMAHA COMMUNITY AND BEYOND, COMING TOGETHER FOR ONE COMMON GOAL TO HELP THY NEIGHBOR. I’M ACTUALLY FROM UTAH OUT HERE DOING A MISSION FOR MY CHURCH AND, UM, A BIG PART OF THAT TO ME IS JUST TO BE CHARITABLE TO OTHERS, TO GO OUT AND TO SERVE WHERE I CAN. AND TODAY, LIKE, OBVIOUSLY, IT’S PRETTY SAD OF WHAT’S GOING ON, JUST BEING ABLE TO BE OUT HERE AND HELP PEOPLE, UM, BE ABLE TO KIND OF JUST FEEL LOVE AND JOY AND PEACE IN A HARD TIME. IT’S BASICALLY WHY WHY WE’RE OUT HERE. IT’S REALLY COOL TO SEE EVERYBODY COME OUT AND HELP OUT. FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE VICTIMS OF THIS AWFUL STORM. I JUST REALLY SHOWS THE SUPPORT OUT HERE AND HOW MUCH PEOPLE REALLY CARE FOR EACH OTHER, ESPECIALLY WHEN STUFF LIKE THIS HAPPENS. REPORTER AS FOR MCCOY, HIS HOUSE MIGHT HAVE BEEN LOST, BUT NOT ALL WAS LOST. SO HIS HARLEY DAVIDSON IS IN THERE AND YESTERDAY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TOLD HIM THAT IT WAS UNSAFE AND HE COULDN’T GET IN THERE AND GET HIS HARLEY. SO WE SAID, WELL, THE FIRE DEPARTMENT IS NOT HERE TODAY. SO AFTER WE HELPED HIM FIND HIS VALUABLES, WE, UH, WE SAID WE’RE GOING TO GET IN THAT GARAGE, WE’RE GOING TO GET YOUR BIKE OUT. AND ONCE THE GARAGE DOOR WAS OPEN THERE IT WAS, MCCOY’S HARLEY WITH BARELY A SCRATCH ON IT. IT’S MY BABY. SO. SO, UH, I WANT TO TAKE CARE OF HER. YEAH. WITH THE HELP OF VOLUNTEERS, ALL AROUND THE OMAHA METRO AREA, THESE NEIGHBORHOODS AND COMMUNITIES WILL LOOK TO REBUILD AND BE BACK STRONGER THA

Houses and communities were destroyed in the Elkhorn area on Friday after tornadoes tore through Omaha.Volunteers flooded the Ramblewood community of Elkhorn to help residents repair and salvage what was left of their homes."It was unsettling," homeowner Ron Mtcoy said.Mtcoy watched his home torn apart from his truck in a nearby cul-de-sac."I watched some of it but then I didn't know if I was going to get hit so I covered my head and bent over in my truck," Mtcoy said.This disaster led to thousands of volunteers flooding in from all over the state and out of the state."Man, there's a bunch of volunteers here who are kicking some butt and it's really appreciated. It's beyond my expectation, way beyond," Mtcoy said.Matthew Hess, a man from Utah joined in on the cleanup efforts to help rebuild the community."I'm actually from Utah out here doing a mission for my church and a big part of that for me is to be charitable to others to go out and serve where I can. Today, obviously it's pretty sad what's going on and just being able to be out here and help people, be able to feel love and joy and peace in a hard time is basically why we're out here," Hess said.As for Mtcoy, his house might have been lost but not all was lost. Volunteers helped him rescue his beloved Harley Davidson that was trapped in his garage."It's my baby, so I want to take care of her."With the help of volunteers all around the Omaha metro area, these neighborhoods and communities will look to rebuild and be back stronger than ever.Click here for the latest headlines from KETV NewsWatch 7

Volunteers flooded the Ramblewood community of Elkhorn to help residents repair and salvage what was left of their homes.

"It was unsettling," homeowner Ron Mtcoy said.
Mtcoy watched his home torn apart from his truck in a nearby cul-de-sac.
